BJP crosses 100 seats in Rajya Sabha for the first time
The saffron party lost its lone Rajya Sabha seat in Punjab but gained one in each of the three northeastern states and Himachal Pradesh
New Delhi: For the first time in history, the BJP has 100 Rajya Sabha members after gaining one seat each in Tripura, Assam, and Nagaland in just concluded elections to the Upper House.
The saffron party lost its lone Rajya Sabha seat in Punjab but gained one in each of the three northeastern states and Himachal Pradesh, where all five outgoing members were from opposition parties, in the recently held biennial polls for 13 Rajya Sabha seats across six states.
The Aam Aadmi Party won all five seats in Punjab. While the Rajya Sabha website has yet to publish the updated tally, the BJP's total will hit 100 if the three seats it obtained in the most recent round of elections are added to the 97 it already has.
BJP’s had just 55 seats in the Rajya Sabha in 2014, and it has subsequently steadily increased as the party has won power in a number of states. Though BJP is way short of securing majority in the 245 members House, the BJP’s score rise steadily after PM Modi led BJP to power at the centre.
The last time a party had 100 or more Upper House seats was in 1990, when the then-ruling Congress had 108 members before its steady decline after its numbers fell to 99 in the 1990 biennial polls and continued to decline as a stream of states fell out of its rule and the coalition era began and continued until 2014.
However, the saffron party's grip on the landmark may be slipping as polls for about 52 more seats are set to be contested shortly, with the saffron party predicted to suffer defeats in states such as Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan,Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Jharkhand.
