A couple of days ago, some 18 leaders of six states held a meeting to discuss the way forward after the party's latest drubbing in state elections. The Congress has lost Punjab and has been practically wiped out in Uttar Pradesh and the other states.
The leaders were expected to take some hard stand, but the outcome of the meeting seemed to be mellowed down. The statement issued by them only said that the leaders were in favour of a "collective, inclusive leadership" and demanded that Congress be proactive and create a platform with other like-minded parties to take on the BJP in 2024.
The statement did not mention any organizational elections or a non-Gandhi leader at the top, the demand w which gained momentum.
The sources said that the leaders are not in favour of breaking the party, which will further weaken the strength of the party that has already witnessed debacle after debacle.
Meanwhile, Azad, who is considered a leader of the dissidents' group, is expected to meet Sonia today to convey the views of other leaders.
