Bengaluru: Music composer 'Nadabrahma' Hamsalekha apologised for controversial remarks on the Udupi Pejawar mutt pontiff in a recently held public function in Mysuru. Hamsalekha had spoken there about the Dalits and the practice of untouchability.
Referring to the initiatives by the Pejawar Swamiji to visit the Dalit colonies, Hamsalekha said such visits have become photo-op events and fashionable. He challenged the pontiff, asking, "Can he eat chicken if offered, or can he eat mutton fry or liver fry? I don't think that visiting the houses of Dalits is a big achievement".
His remarks stirred the hornet's nest on social media. Some netizens demanded apologies for insulting the Pejawar pontiff. He responded by apologizing for the controversy. He regretted the statement. He said he has high regard for the efforts being made by elders and personalities to banish untouchability.
"Even my wife did not like some of my utterances, and I sought apologies from her", he said. "I am a musician and do not want to hurt anyone. Just like my music which gives comfort to others, my words and life also should make them happy", he added.
