Men in Blue wear black armbands to pay respects to Lata Mangeshkar
India played its 500th match in 2002 and two decades later would reach the milestone of playing 1000 ODIs.
Ahmedabad: The Indian Cricket Team is wearing black armbands today to pay their respects to Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkar who passed away on Sunday morning.
BCCI said in a tweet, "The queen of melody, Lata didi loved cricket, always supported the game and backed Team India".
Legendary playback singer Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkar, aged 92, passed away due to multi-organ failure after more than 28 days of hospitalisation post- COVID-19. Soon after the news of Lata Mangeshkar’s death, several fans, politicians, and celebrities took to Twitter and paid tribute to the legendary singer.
Pakistan Cricketer Babar Azam said in a tweet, "End of a golden era. Her magical voice and legacy will continue to live in the hearts of millions worldwide. An unparalleled icon! RIP Smt. Lata Mangeshkar Ji."
Today, the Indian cricket team is playing 1000th ODI at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Team India will become the first team in the world to feature in 1000 ODIs. Rohit Sharma will lead India in the historical ODI match.

Meanwhile, the BCCI president Sourav Ganguly in an interview with PTI has said that there won’t be any elaborate celebrations during the 1000th ODI because the BCCI needs to maintain the Covid-19 protocols.
The three ODIs will now be played at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad and three T20Is will be held at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata. The decision to limit the series to two venues instead of six as originally announced has been done to mitigate biosecurity risks by cutting down on travel and movement of the teams, match officials, broadcasters, and other stakeholders.
