Harassing juniors through informal WhatsApp groups to be treated as ragging: UGC

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has instructed higher education institutions to closely monitor unofficial WhatsApp groups formed by senior students that may be used to harass juniors, warning that such activities will be treated as ragging and will attract strict disciplinary action under existing anti-ragging regulations.

According to officials, the UGC receives numerous complaints each year from first-year students reporting instances of harassment by seniors.

"In many cases, seniors create informal WhatsApp groups, reach out to juniors, and subject them to mental harassment. This behavior constitutes ragging and will be dealt with accordingly," the UGC stated in its latest advisory.
