Late to School, Girl Forced to Do ‘100 Sit-Ups’ With Bag on Back Dies; Teacher Arrested
A woman teacher has been arrested in Maharashtra’s Palghar district after a Class 6 student died, allegedly due to being forced to perform 100 sit-ups as punishment for arriving late to school, officials said on Thursday.
The teacher, who has since been removed from the private school in Sativali, Vasai, has been booked for culpable homicide not amounting to murder under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, according to Waliv police.
On November 8, the 13-year-old student was allegedly ordered to do 100 sit-ups with her school bag on her back for coming late. Her mother has claimed that the “inhuman punishment” caused her daughter to collapse, as she already had underlying health issues.
The girl fell seriously ill and was admitted to a Mumbai hospital, where she died seven days later.
The death triggered protests from local residents and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena workers, leading police to formally register a case. The teacher was arrested on Tuesday night.
The education department has initiated an inquiry into the incident, while the Vasai–Virar Municipal Corporation has also launched a separate probe.
