Punjab CM Channi urges PM Modi to resume dialogue with protesting farmers

New Delhi: Amid political turmoil in Punjab, Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi at PMO on Friday.

Punjab CM Charanjit Singh Channi after meeting PM Modi, said, "I asked the PM to resolve the matter of farmers' protest and resume dialogue with the protesting farmers. I demanded that the three laws should be withdrawn."

The chief minister request comes  after the  Supreme Court today came down heavily on farmers’ groups protesting against the agricultural laws saying that protest has ‘strangulated the Delhi and blocked the highways”. A division bench comprising Justice A.M. Khanwilkar and C.T. Ravikumar expressed displeasure against the farmers’ association blocking the city roads and highways. The bench expressed its displeasure while hearing a petition filed by Kisan Mahapanchayat seeking permission from the top court to hold a protest at Jantar Manta, the selected protest site in Delhi.

Talking to reporters on the meeting with the Prime Minister,  Channi told reporters, "Although it was a courtesy call, I have shared three  issues with him. Firstly, procurement season usually begins in Punjab on 1st October but this year Centre has decided to begin it on 10th October . I've requested him to start procurement now."

Also, he requested PM Modi that the Kartarpur Corridor, which was closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, should be reopened at the earliest.
