'Sardar 2’ Gets U/A Certificate**
CHENNAI: Karthi-starrer spy thriller Sardar 2, directed by P S Mithran, has received a U/A certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), clearing the much-awaited sequel for its worldwide theatrical release on September 10.
Production house Prince Pictures, which is backing the film, announced the certification on social media with the message, “Stillness before the Storm. #Sardar2 certified with U/A.”
The certification comes amid considerable anticipation surrounding the sequel, which promises to take forward the themes explored in the first instalment while addressing a new and unsettling issue linked to public health and hygiene.
Speaking at the audio and trailer launch, Karthi hinted at the impact the film could have on audiences. Referring to the film’s central theme, he said viewers who regularly drink water from plastic bottles might reconsider the practice after watching Sardar 2.
“You might have continued the practice of drinking water from plastic water bottles, but after watching this film, you won't be able to ignore the point it looks to make. That is because we've spoken about a truth that pertains to your health, and that issue is bound to leave you shaken,” Karthi said.
In the first Sardar, Mithran explored the commercialisation of water, with the film going on to become a major blockbuster. For Sardar 2, the filmmaker has shifted focus towards issues surrounding health and hygiene.
Karthi also praised Mithran's efforts, describing the filmmaker's approach as sincere and expressing his hope that the film reaches a wide audience. He added that fans were ready to embrace films that tackle important social issues while delivering an engaging cinematic experience.
The Sardar 2 team completed the film's shooting in Bangkok in June 2025, following an extensive production schedule. The unit had crossed 100 days of filming by April last year.
The sequel was announced with a promotional video that showed Karthi's character being assigned a spy mission in Cambodia. Clarifying the film's international setting, Mithran had earlier revealed that the story would initially move to Cambodia before shifting to China.
Actress Malavika Mohanan is part of the cast, and she had previously revealed during an interaction with fans that she would complete her portions of the film in June 2025.
On the technical front, Sardar 2 features cinematography by George Williams and music by Sam C S. Vijay Velukutty is handling the editing, while MSP Madhavan and B Sekar are in charge of art direction. The screenplay has been written by Rathna Kumar, Aashameera Aiyappan and Vignesh Muniyand. Action choreography is by Dhilip Subbarayan and Chethan D'Souza.
With its U/A certification now secured, Sardar 2 is set for a worldwide theatrical release on September 10.
