Kabul: After the Afghanistan government has offered power-sharing with the Taliban in the ongoing peace talks in Doha, the Taliban has captured Kandahar, the second-largest city in the war-torn country.

The capture of Kandahar and Herat is considered as the Taliban’s two biggest military victories since they began a broad offensive in May. Also, the Taliban have captured the key southern city of Lashkar Gah. According to news agency AFP, military and government officials evacuated the city after striking a deal with the militants.

The offer is a u-turn from the Afghan side after denial for power-sharing with the Taliban during the peace talks. The peace talks are going on in a neutral country Qatar. The offer comes the day the Afghan government reached out to the international community raising concerns of atrocities by the Taliban's after the US government pulled back forces after two decades. The US forces have dislodged the Taliban's in 2001 post-9/11.

The Talibans have captured 12 of 34 provincial capitals as part of a weeklong onslaught. A crucial highway linking the Afghan capital, Kabul, with the country's southern provinces has been cut-off after the capture of Ghazni.

Consulate General of India in Mazar-e-Sharif had arranged a special flight for Indian nationals in and around Mazar-e-Sharif amidst the raging fight between Taliban and government forces. Indian nationals were requested to leave for India on the special flight scheduled to depart late Tuesday evening.
