Supreme Court to hear Mekedatu plea on January 27

Tamil Nadu has challenged the Mekedatu reservoir project of Karnataka. It has contended that the proposed project was contrary to the Cauvery Tribunal order.

Bengaluru: The Supreme Court has adjourned the hearing for a petition challenging Karnataka's ambitious Mekedatu drinking water project to January 27. 

Tamil Nadu has challenged the National Gren Tribunal (NGT) Southern bench order forming a joint committee to conduct a spot inspection to check whether Karnataka started construction of building a reservoir at Mekedatu across the Cauvery river. 

Supreme Court has clubbed the petitions filed by Tamil Nadu government with the main petition. TN has filed an SLP challenging the Mekedatu project and now challenging the NGT order. 

A division bench headed by Justice D. Chandrachud said that it will club the with main petition on Mekedatu reservoir. Karnataka has decided to construct a small reservoir across the Cauvery river at Mekedatu near Kanakapura. 

Meanwhile, Opposition Congress will embark Padayatra from Mekedatu to Bengaluru from  January 9 to 19, demanding the state government to implement the project.
