Tamil Nadu CM Stalin introduces Bill to exempt state from NEET

Chennai: In the ongoing Tamil Nadu Assembly Session, Chief Minister MK Stalin on Monday introduced a bill to exempt the state from The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET).

The Bill says admission to undergraduate medical courses will be held based on the marks scored by students in their plus-two exams as was the case before NEET came into existence in 2017.

While introducing the bill, MK Stalin said, "We took steps to cancel the NEET exam as soon as we came to power. The government is taking all constructive steps to cancel the NEET exam and enrol students in medical education on basis of Class 12 marks. I request you all to support the Bill (seeking permanent exemption from NEET)".

The chief minister lashed out at opposition AIADMK for complying with the Centre's on the NEET issue.

"You (AIADMK) were in alliance with Centre, you still are. When it came to voting for CAA and farm laws, you should've imposed a condition of exemption from NEET. You didn't have the courage to raise your voice, you ruled in silence until the death of aspirants", he said.

Kanimozhi, DMK MP in Chennai, "We are against the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), we don't want NEET. We want our students to be given a fair chance and equal opportunity. This is against social justice".

The bill has been introduced a day after a 19-year old NEET aspirant belonging to a village near Salem died of suicide. The police said that he was to appear for the national test for the third time after having failed to clear the test in two previous attempt.
