Bhabanipur: After the last round of counting, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee won against BJP candidate Priyanka Tibrewal by 58,832 votes in the Bhabanipur Assembly by-election, as per Election Commission data. Banerjee has exceeded her own record of the 2011 Bhabanipur bye-election where she won by 54,213 votes.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Kolkata said, "I have won the Bhabanipur Assembly bypolls with a margin of 58,832 votes and have registered the victory in every ward of the constituency"

"Since the elections started in Bengal, Central Govt hatched conspiracies to remove us (from power). I was hurt in my feet so that I don't contest the polls. I am grateful to the public for voting for us & to ECI for conducting polls within 6 months, " she said.

"There is no base of any other party other than TMC here. The party & Didi work for the people. We will form Govt in Delhi in 2024," told CM's brother Kartik to news agency ANI.

"I will declare candidate names of the three seats for the state bypolls:
Shantipur: Brajakishore Goswami
Dinhata: Udayan Guha
Khardah: Sovan Deb Chattopadhyay
Gosaba name not finalised. I will declare a little later."

The Thursday bypoll in the Bhabanipur Assembly constituency registered a relatively low voter turnout amidst isolated disturbances, while byelections to two other seats saw a higher turnout.

Till 5 p.m., about 53.32% voters had exercised their franchise in Bhabanipur, compared to 76.12% in Jangipur and 78.60% at Samserganj, where, along with Pipili, elections were adjourned due to the death of candidates during the Assembly polls in April.

In the assembly elections held in May 2021, Mamata Banerjee lost in a cliffhanger in Nandigram to the BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari, her former protege. Suvendu Adhikari was declared the winner by 1,956 votes. Suvendu Adhikari had vowed to quit politics if he didn’t defeat Mamata Banerjee by more than 50,000 votes.

Taunting his former mentor, Adhikari had also asked her to be ready with a letterhead that says: “Former chief minister”.
