AAP wins 14 seats in Chandigarh Municipal polls, BJP gets 12
Assembly elections will be held in Punjab in early next year, AAP has made its debut in Chandigarh civic polls. It has promised the city voters to provide corruption-free administration.
Chandigarh: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has made a good start ahead of the assemby elections in Punjab. The party has won 14 seats in the Chandigarh civic body polls on Monday.
In final tally, Aam Adami Party (AAP) won 14 of 35 municipal seats, with the BJP close behind at 12 seats. Congress won eight seats in the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation elections.
Punjab, which will go for elections early next year, AAP is doing aggressive campaigning and offering freebies to the people. Sitting Mayor Ravi Kant Sharma of BJP has been defeated by AAP candidate Damanpreet Singh.
Elections were held on Friday for 35 new municipal councillors in Chandigarh, the capital of Punjab and Haryana. The results are likely to be out by this afternoon.
AAP is contesting the Chandigarh Municipal council polls for the first time, promising the voters to provide corruption-free administration and progressive governance. AAP is leading in three seats. AAP’s nearest rivals, BJP and Congress won four and three seats respectively.
The BJP has a majority in the current municipal body. In the last polls, the BJP had won 20 seats and its former ally Akali Dal, one seat. The Congress had managed to win only four seats.
Traditionally, the election held every five years is a straight rivalry between the BJP and Congress, but entering the AAP in the picture has made a four-way contest between Punjab's ruling Congress, AAP, BJP, and the Akali Dal-BSP alliance.
