Ms. Dev has written to Congress president Sonia Gandhi and has cited no reason for her decision to quit the party, but talking about a “new chapter of public service”.
She is a daughter of Assam Congress stalwart and influential Bengali leader Santosh Mohan Dev; She was appointed as All India Mahila Congress wing. She had earlier been an MP from Silchar in Assam, represented by her father.
Ms. Dev was among the Congress leaders whose Twitter handle was locked over a post showing images of the nine-year-old girl rape victim parents in Delhi.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi shared the images after he met with the parents, and many tweeted it. As Rahul Gandhi's account was blocked, several Congress leaders, including Ms Dev, changed their display picture to the Congress MP's in solidarity. The account was restored last week, after which the Congress posted “Satyameva Jayate”.
Meanwhile, senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal took a Twitter handle to express his displeasure against party high command regarding quitting Sushmita Dev.
“Sushmita Dev, Resigns from the primary membership of our Party. While young leaders leave, we ‘oldies’ are blamed for our efforts to strengthen it. The Party moves on with: Eyes Wide Shut”, Mr. Sibhal tweeted.
