Mad rush at Kabul's Hamid Karzai airport, 5 killed: Report
Kabul: At least five people were killed in Kabul airport as hundreds of people forcibly tried to enter planes leaving Kabul, according to reports by Reuters.
Thousands of people trying to flee the country were seen storming the tarmac in a desperate attempt to leave the country. All commercial flights have been cancelled from Hamid Karzai International Airport ensuing the chaos.
Al Jazeera reported that one person witnessed the bodies of five people being taken to a vehicle. Another witness says it is unclear whether the victims have been killed by gunshots or in a stampede.
United Airlines, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic have announced that they are not using Afghanistan’s airspace following the Taliban takeover of Kabul.
Meanwhile, Air India's AI 126 Chicago-Delhi flight diverted to Gulf airspace due to the closure of Afghan airspace. The flight was diverted to Sharjah for refuelling due to the closure of the airspace. Also, AI-174 San Francisco-Delhi will land in Sharjah approximately in an hour.
Afghanistan Civil Aviation Authority (ACAA) stated that Kabul airspace have been released to the military and it advises transit aircraft to reroute, according to a notice to airmen on its website.
The Taliban has declared the 'war in Afghanistan is over' after its fighters swept into the capital, Kabul, and President Ashraf Ghani fled to Tajikistan on Sunday. Subsequently, a Taliban leader tells Reuters news agency the fighters are regrouping from different provinces, and will wait until foreign forces had left before creating a new governance structure.
