Bangladesh thrash PNG
In the first game of the day, the newbies to world cricket, PNG, were made to face the wrath of the Bangla Tigers as they lost the game by a whopping 84 runs courtesy of an all round show by the veteran Shakib Al Hasan.
It was coming wasn't it. It was about to happen. Even with all their success stories of qualifying for the world cup and everything, PNG would find it very hard once they face the full member nations. And they were up against an angry Bangladesh team, who after losing their first game, are fired up and motivated to bring their best. PNG stood no chance.
In this mismatch of a contest, Bangla skipper Mahmudullah opted to bat first to make the first use of this beautiful batting wicket. Spotlight was on the underperforming Liton Das, to find his touch before the next stage. He did look good, but not for very long though and was out for 29. Veteran keeper Rahim too hasn't hit the ground running in this tournament yet, as he once again missed out, making just 5.
Shakib Al Hasan played a good hand coming in at No.3, scoring 46 off 37. He hit three monstrous sixes in this innings, but even then couldn't get his strike rate higher as he had to slow down as wickets fell at the other end. Skipper Mahmudullah though, didn't show any sign of slowing down, from the very first ball of his innings. He took all the bowlers on and brought up a brilliant half century in just 27 deliveries. It was him really, that had the impetus to this otherwise slow going innings. With the help of some late hitting from Saifuddin in the last over, the Tigers posted a mammoth 181 for 7.
Once the target went past 160, the game was already out of hands for the PNG. And their batting for even worse, since the target was too big to even attempt to get them. The top order struggled to even get the ball off the square. Credit must be given also, to the impeccable line and lengths from Tigers bowlers.
Shakib in particular, was the chief tormentor with the ball. The PNG batters were no match for this wily old left arm spinner. He finished his spell with amazing figures of 4-0-9-4. Because of this mastery from Shakib, PNG at one stage were left reeling at 29 for 7. Utter humiliation was almost on their way for the PNG. But they had Kiplin Doriga to rescue them from the trenches and provide some respectability to their total.
Out of all the 11 batters, only Doriga and Soper made it to the double digits. More surprising is the fact that these two came on at No.8 and No.9 respectively. With nothing to lose, Doriga played some fearless cricket and brought out all shots he could offer. He got out for an impressive 46 off 34 with two biggies. Astonishingly enough, when all the bowlers had a day out and were amongst wickets, the Fizz took some tap at the back end and gave away 34 from his four, that too without a wicket.
Brief Scores: Bangladesh 181/7 in 20 overs (Mahmudullah 50, Shakib 46; Kabua Morea 2-26, Assad Vala 2-26) beat PNG 97 all out in 19.3 overs (Kiplin Doriga 46*; Shakib 4-9) by 84 runs
