California: The social media giant Facebook has rebranded itself as Meta, which was announced at the Facebook Connect augmented and virtual reality conference, reflecting the company’s growing ambitions beyond social media with the metaverse.
The company claims, "Meta is helping to build the metaverse, a place where we’ll play and connect in 3D. Welcome to the next chapter of social connection. The names of the apps that we build—Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp—will remain the same".
"Our company’s vision is to help bring the metaverse to life, so we are changing our name to reflect our commitment to this future".
"We've learned a lot from struggling with social issues and living under closed platforms, and now it is time to take everything that we've learned and help build the next chapter," CEO Mark Zuckerberg said during an annual developers conference.
"I am proud to announce that starting today, our company is now Meta. Our mission remains the same, still about bringing people together, our apps and their brands, they're not changing," he added.
The new name comes as the Facebook is battling to one of its worst crises yet and pivot to its ambitions for the "metaverse," which would blur the lines between the physical world and the digital one.
