Hijab ban: SC to list pleas challenging Karnataka HC order after Holi vacations
In a judgement that has far-reaching consequences, the three-judge Bench of the Karnataka High Court has ruled that the wearing of hijabs are not part of the essential religious faith protected in the Constitution.
New Delhi: The Hijab ban matter was mentioned before the Supreme Court for urgent hearing by senior advocate Sanjay Hegde on Wednesday after the Karnataka High Court upheld the ban on wearing Hijab in schools and colleges.
The apex court said it would consider the listing of pleas related to hearing, after Holi vacations.
Senior advocate Sanjay Hegde had appeared for Udupi girl students while Devadutt Kamat represented Muslim girl students from Kundapura College in the Hijab ban issue in the Karnataka High Court.

While dismissing the batch of the petitions, the Bench observed that the wearing of hijab doesn't come under the essential religious rights guaranteed in the Constitution. The Court also stated that government has the power to prescribe uniforms in the schools and colleges in the state.
