Hijab row: FIR against Muslim students, Mysuru college cancels uniform rule
A private college in Mysuru city canceled its uniform rule on Friday to allow Muslim students to attend classes with the hijab. It is the first college in the state to take such a decision.
Bengaluru: Karnataka Government has ordered to register FIR against protesting Muslim girls demanding to wear Hijabs in the classrooms.
Following strict instructions from the Home Minister Araga Jnanendra, Tumakuru police have registered FIR against girls students who protested outside the college gate urging college management to allow them to wear hijabs in the classrooms.
FIR has been lodged against them for violating prohibitory orders and also violating the interim order of the High Court, banning the hijabs, saffron shawls, or any religious clothing inside classrooms in the institutions where College Development Committee (CDC) prescribed Uniforms.
Tumakuru police have registered an FIR against at least 10 girls for violating prohibitory orders issued under Section 144 of CrPC by staging a protest against the hijab rule outside Girls Empress Govt PU College in Tumkur on Feb 17, under Sections 143, 145, 188 and 149 of IPC
However many schools and pre-university colleges there is uniforms prescribed by the CDC, but those colleges were strictly prohibiting the wearing of hijabs and not allowing Muslim students to attend classes with hijabs.
In Tumakuru, the Principal of Empress College has filed a complaint against protesting Muslim students before the City police station. In the complaint, he stated that around 15 to 20 students have violated the prohibitory orders in the last two days. The students demanded their right to wear hijab and attend classes.
Mysuru College allows Hijab: Meanwhile, a private college in the city canceled its uniform rule on Friday to allow Muslim students to attend classes with the hijab. It is the first college in the state to take such a decision.
The decision has taken by the college management after four students have refused to attend the classes without the hijab and were protesting.
Srinivasa Murthy DDPI of Mysuru said that some organizations extended support to them. I visited the college today and held a discussion with all. However, the college has allowed Muslim students to wear hijabs and canceled its uniform rule.
The principal of Indi college in the Vijaypura district has sent back a few Hindu students for wearing Sindoor (vermillion). Hindu girl student was stopped at the gate and asked to remove the Sindoor as no religious symbols are allowed. However, parents and relatives of the students arrived at the college, questioned the action of the Principal and they said that wearing Sindoor is basic Hindu tradition and same should not be questioned. After police intervention, the college Principal has allowed the student to the classroom. Meanwhile, Sriram Sene founder Pramod Muthalik has demanded suspension of the Principal.
In a video, the Principal of a Junior college in the Coorg district shouted at hijab-wearing students to leave the college otherwise he will lodge a complaint against them. Video shows that he was so ruthless against the Muslim girl students.
