The event was held to protest against the recent arrests of several youths in connection with the communal violence in Nuh district, which claimed at least six lives.
The Hindu Samaj Panchayat, which did not have the police permission for the gathering, issued a seven-day ultimatum to the police to release the arrested youths. The outfit also called for the removal of the Anjuman mosque in Gurgaon's Sector 57, citing its location in a predominantly Hindu area.
DLF Gurugram senior police officer Vikas Kaushik told news agency ANI that the mahapanchayat has assured them the event will be held peacefully. "For the past two-three days, Gurugram has been peaceful. No incident has been reported. We feel that today's panchayat will be carried out peacefully. We have had talks with all sides. They have assured us that the panchayat will happen peacefully... The panchayat starts at 9 am. Some 500-1,000 people are expected to come," the senior official said as reported by ANI.
Haryana police are also investigating possible Pakistan connections in the communal clashes, based on videos of the violence on YouTube driven by Pakistan-based handles.
Meanwhile, the district administration continued demolishing illegal constructions at 12 different places, including on 2.6 acres of land around a medical college in Nuh.
