New Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai comes from non-RSS background
Bengaluru: BJP Legislative Party departed from traditional approach in the appointment of chief minister in Karnataka. The BJPLP Tuesday appointed Basavaraj Bommai, from non-RSS background, as new chief minister.
Basavaraj Bommai became the 23rd Chief Minister of Karnataka.
Basavaraj Bommai started his political leader as an MLC from Janata Dal, formed through the merger of Janata Party factions. Bommai was twice elected to legislative council on Janata Dal (United) ticket.

Bommai joined BJP in 2008, a year after Kumaraswamy breach the power-sharing agreement with BS Yediyurappa. Bommai rose in the party leadership swiftly and became chief minister 13 after joing the saffron party.
Previous chief ministers of Karnataka, BS Yediyurappa, Sadanand Gowda, and Jagadish Shettar, come from Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
