NHAI deploys GIS technology for real-time vehicle monitoring across 100 toll plazas
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will monitor approximately 100 toll plazas using GIS-based software to ensure smooth traffic flow on national highways, according to an official statement released on Monday. These toll plazas have been selected based on congestion feedback received through the 1,033 national highway helpline.
The live monitoring system will provide real-time congestion alerts and recommend lane adjustments when vehicle queues exceed the prescribed limit at a toll plaza. The statement also mentioned that the monitoring service will gradually be expanded to cover more toll plazas.
The software will provide detailed information, including the name and location of each toll plaza, the live status of queue lengths in metres, total waiting times, and vehicle speeds. Additionally, it will issue congestion alerts and suggest lane distribution changes if queues exceed acceptable limits.
Moreover, the software will offer updates on current weather conditions and local festivals, enabling NHAI officials to take proactive measures to manage traffic and reduce congestion at toll plazas.
