Discontent in Goa Congress intensifies, senior leaders resigns

Panaji: Internal bickering in Goa Congress has intensified with several leaders have resigned to the party on the day of Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s visit to the poll-bound state.

Congress leaders from Goa’s Porvorim Assembly constituency resigned to the party just before the arrival of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. This group was supported by Independent MLA, Rohan Khaunte, who claimed that Congress was not serious about contesting Assembly elections, scheduled to be held in early 2022.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is here to attend a series of meeting with party functionaries for preparations for next year Assembly elections.

"The Congress party does not seem to be interested in contesting the upcoming Goa elections seriously. It is a non-starter due to the attitude of some of its leaders," Gupesh Naik, a former Zilla panchayat member who resigned to the party.

Party senior leader from South Goa Moreno Rebelo too resigned to the party. He has stated that he was upset after the party announced the "candidature" to sitting MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco from the Curtorim constituency "despite he working against the party". Mr Rebelo is from Curtorim.

The spate of resignations came after differences emerged in the Congress over the nature of its understanding with the Goa Forward Party (GFP) for the assembly polls.
