Chennai rain, four killed, NDRF team deployed

Chennai; City has received heavy rainfall since Saturday. Four people have died in rain related incident and one person has been injured.

Tamil Nadu government revenue and disaster management cell said that, Chennai has received heavy rainfall on record since 2015.

Chennai and several suburbs in Chengalpet, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts have witnessed intermittent rain since Saturday morning. Prime Minister Narendra Modi called Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, assured him all necessary assistance to the state to combat rain.

The Chennai Corporation has set up pump sets in 500 locations to remove the logged water. Further, 1,00,000 food packets were also distributed for breakfast. Relief camps providing food, shelter and medical care have been opened in the city.

Chief Minister MK Stalin, dressed in a raincoat, was seen distributing relief material. Mr Stalin has announced a two-day holiday for schools in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpet and Kancheepuram districts due to heavy rainfall. He would review situation at 8 locations today and distribute relief to affected people, NDTV reported.

NDRF team has been deployed to shift the people stayed in rain affected areas to safer zone. Schools and colleges have been shut for 4 days.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDRF) has pre-deployed four of its teams in Tamil Nadu on state government's request. While one team each has been deployed in Thiruvallur and Chengalpattu district, two others are in Madurai district.
