Trump Warns of 10% Additional Tariff on India 'If It Stays in BRICS'

NEW YORK: (Jul 9) Former U.S. President Donald Trump has said that India could face a 10% additional tariff on its exports to the United States if it continues as part of the BRICS alliance.
Speaking at a campaign event on Monday, Trump remarked, “If India wants to remain in BRICS and benefit from U.S. markets at the same time, they will have to pay—maybe 10% more, maybe higher. We can’t keep giving free access while they align with our rivals.”
The statement comes amid heightened scrutiny of BRICS—which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—as it seeks to expand its global influence and challenge Western-dominated financial structures.
Trump’s warning signals a potential shift in future U.S. trade policy with countries seen as strategically leaning away from Western alliances. It also adds to the pressure on New Delhi as it tries to balance its global partnerships.
There has been no official response yet from India’s Ministry of External Affairs regarding Trump's comments.
