Kabul:  At least 25 people were killed and dozens wounded in a blast that hit the biggest military hospital in Kabul on Tuesday.  A senior Taliban commander among dead in the hospital attack, reported news agency AFP. 

The deceased commander has been identified as the Taliban military chief for Kabul, Qari Hamdullah, and commander of Badri Brigade (special forces). He was an Haqqani senior commander who previously served as the Taliban shadow governor for Paktika and Khost provinces.

The Sardar Daud Khan hospital is the biggest military hospital in Kabul. The hospital treats injured Taliban fighters and former Afghan republic soldiers alike. This is the latest attack to rock Afghanistan since the Taliban seized power. 

According to reports, the Taliban's rivals, the Islamic State group, has claimed responsibility for the attack.  A Taliban official later said a suicide bomber and gunmen were behind the attack, reports Al Jazeera.

“The attack was initiated by a suicide bomber on a motorcycle who blew himself up at the entrance of the hospital,” said the official on condition on anonymity, adding the assailants had all been killed.

United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) condemned the attack.  "UN condemns today’s horrific attack on hospital in #Kabul. Attacks targeting medical personnel and civilians seeking treatment are violations of human rights and international humanitarian law. Those responsible need to be held to account".
