Supreme Court allows Malayalam news channel Media One to resume broadcast

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday stayed the government order on the Malayalam news channel 'Media One'. The apex allowed the channel to resume the broadcast.

MediaOne TV, had gone off-air again after its name was removed from the list of permitted channels by the Ministry of Information and broadcasting. 

A bench of Justices DY Chandrachud, Surya Kant and Vikram Nath passed the order after examining the files produced by the Ministry of Home Affairs raising security concerns regarding the company running the channel. The bench perused the files itself, without sharing them with the petitioner, with the consent of its counsel Senior Advocate Dushyant Dave.

The channel had applied for broadcast permissions to be renewed from September 30, 2021, to September 29, 2031. On 31 January 2022, MediaOne TV ceased broadcasts at noon after the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting refused to renew the channel's licence to operate in the wake of the MHA's revocation of the security clearance for Madhyamam Broadcasting Limited was revoked by the MHA.

MediaOne TV is one of the few Indian news channels whose ownership lies with an Islamic organization.
