Tamil Nadu Assembly passes resolution against farm laws

Chennai: Tamil Nadu Assembly has adopted a resolution urging the Centre to withdraw its three controversial agricultural laws, which was widely opposed by farmers, and holding protests outside Delhi for months.

The main opposition, AIADMK and its ally BJP staged a walkout over the issue.

As soon as the House convened today, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin moved the resolution, calling for its withdrawal, and sought it to be adopted unanimously.

Deputy Leader of AIADMK legislature, O. Panneerselvam, said while the Chief Minister has listed the disadvantages of the farm laws, its advantages also need to be ascertained.

The former Chief Minister has asked the Chief Minister whether the state government has written to the Centre seeking withdrawal of the law; if so did it has received a reply from the Centre, Mr. Panneerselvam asked.

Leader of the House Duraimurugan said the legislation were adopted when the AIADMK was in power in the state even as M.K. Stalin wanted to know whether the main opposition party will support the state government on its resolution or not. However, AIADMK has insisted the government not move the resolution.

Replying to him, Mr. Panneerselvam said petitions against the farm laws were pending for adjudication before the Supreme Court; any decision on that matter would subjudice the court.

The Chief Minister said some other states had also moved Assembly resolutions against farm laws earlier though the previous AIADMK government has not taken any decision on controversial laws. Opposing the reply of the Chief Minister, AIADMK staged a walkout along with its ally bjp.

Senior legislator of AIADMK, K.P. Anbalagan, said the resolution has been tabled in a "hasty manner" and wanted an evaluation of its pros and cons by holding discussions with relevant stakeholders.

M.K. Stalin said that, based on the party’s electoral promise, it had placed the resolution in the House, opposing the controversial farm laws.
