Washington: US President Biden has invited around 110 countries, except China, to a virtual summit on democracy on Dec 9-10, according to a list released by the State Department on Tuesday.

Taiwan is invited to the summit, but Turkey, a member of NATO, is also missing from the list. The final list leaves out Russia, while in the South Asia region Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka have been excluded, according to a list posted on the State Department website on Tuesday, reported news agency ANI.

President Biden stated on the International Day of Democracy, “No democracy is perfect, and no democracy is ever final. Every gain made, every barrier broken, is the result of determined, unceasing work.”

The summit will focus on challenges and opportunities facing democracies and will provide a platform for leaders to announce both individual and collective commitments, reforms, and initiatives to defend democracy and human rights at home and abroad.
