BIGGEST TRAIN ACCIDENTS SO FAR IN INDIA

August 1999 – Two trains collided head-on in the city of Guwahati in Assam state, killing more than 285 people. November 1998 – Two trains collided in the northern town of Khanna, killing 210 people. The crash happened when a passenger train hit cars that had uncoupled from another train.


  • June 1981: At least 800 people were killed when seven rear coaches of an overcrowded passenger train were blown off the track and fell into a river during a cyclone.
  • August 1999: Two trains collided near Kolkata, leading to the deaths of at least 285 people. The accident took place when the trains, carrying about 2,500 people, collided at the remote station of Gaisal in West Bengal. It happened due to a signalling error. Both trains were using the same track as three of the four tracks on the line were closed for maintenance.
  • July 2011: Around 70 people were killed and over 300 injured when a mail train derailed in Fatehpur. The accident occurred on July 10, 2011, at 12:20, when the 15 coaches of Howrah-Kalka Mail derailed near Malwan. As per news reports, fire and sparks were reported in the AC compartments of the train.
