Central Govt requests Supreme Court to urgently hear NEET-PG admissions case

New Delhi: The Central Government on Monday requested the Supreme Court to hear urgently the case relating to reservation of Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) in NEET admissions for PG medical courses.

Justice DY Chandrachud said he would consult CJI NV Ramana for hearing the case tomorrow or the day after.

Last week, Union Health Minister Dr Mansukh Mandaviya urged resident doctors protesting against the delay in NEET-PG 2021 counselling to call off their strike in the public interest.

The Centre delayed the  counselling given its decision to reconsider Rs 8 lakh annual income criteria for determining the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) category for reservation in the admissions. This led to the nationwide agitation called by FORDA. The court appreciated the Centre for its decision and set January 6 as the date for the next hearing.

The resident doctors under the banner of The Federation of Resident Doctors' Association (FORDA) had called for a nationwide suspension of out-patient department (OPD) services at hospitals starting November 27, as a mark of protest against the alleged delay in conducting NEET-PG 2021 counselling.

The NEET was scheduled for December 2020 but was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The exam was finally held in September 2021. But, counselling for admissions for entry to medical colleges got delayed which sparked the protest.
