New Delhi: Resident doctors of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) continued to protest against the delay in NEET-Post Graduation counselling on Tuesday. The doctors protested over alleged police brutality during the protests.
Resident doctors had a faceoff with policemen at south Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital on Monday after they were stopped from marching to the Supreme Court.
"Today also we are trying to march towards Supreme Court. Yesterday, we tried to go but Police stopped us and beat up our resident doctors," said a protester to news agency ANI.
Last month, The Federation of Resident Doctors' Association (FORDA) have called for a nationwide suspension of out-patient department (OPD) services at hospitals starting November 27, as a mark of protest against the alleged delay in conducting NEET-PG 2021 counselling.
The NEET was scheduled in December 2020 but was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The exam was finally held in September this year. But counselling for admissions for entry to medical colleges got delayed, which sparked the protest.
After the Centre informed the Supreme Court that the counselling for the NEET-PG will be further postponed by four weeks given its decision to reconsider Rs 8 lakh annual income criteria for determining the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) category for reservation in the admissions. This led to the nationwide agitation called by FORDA. The court appreciated the Centre for its decision and set January 6 as the date for the next hearing.
