China’s Wuhan will test its citizens as covid cases haunt after a year

Beijing: More than a year after Coronavirus emerged in the city, the authorities in Wuhan have said that it would test the entire population for Covid-19.

The city of 11 million is launching comprehensive nucleic acid testing of all residents, said senior Wuhan official Li Tao on Tuesday.

Wuhan authorities said that seven locally transmitted infections had been found among migrant workers in the city; there is no domestic cases reported in Wuhan.

China has strictly enforced the rules of confining its citizens in their homes, disconnected domestic transports, and rolled out mass testing in recent days as it battles its largest coronavirus outbreak in months.

As of Tuesday, China reported 61 domestic cases. It was a fast-spreading delta variant that reached dozens of cities after infections among airport cleaners in Nanjing sparked a chain of cases reported across the country.

Major cities like Beijing have now tested millions of residents while cordoning off residential compounds and placing close contacts under quarantine.
