Congress heavyweight Captain Amarinder Singh decides to quit grand old party
"So far I am in Congress but I will not remain in Congress. I have already made my position very clear. I will not be treated in this manner"
New Delhi: Former Chief Minister of Punjab and Congress heavyweight, Captain Amarinder Singh has made up his mind to end his long-standing association with the grand old party following 'humiliation' meted out by the party high command to him.
In an interview with NDTV, Mr. Singh who is in Delhi for two days said that "So far I am in the Congress but I will not remain in the Congress. I have already made my position very clear. I will not be treated in this manner", he said and ruling out of joining BJP.
"I have been in politics for 52 years. I have my own beliefs, my own principles. The way I have been treated. At 10.30 am the Congress President says you resign. I didn't ask any questions. I said I will do it just now. At 4 pm I went to the Governor and resigned. If you doubt me after 50 years and my credibility is at stake. If there is no trust, what is the point of me staying in the party?", Captain told NDTV.
Meanwhile, Mr. Amarinder Singh has removed 'Congress' from his Twitter bio. Further former Chief Minister said that "Congress is a downfall in Punjab and termed PCC chief Navjot Singh Sidhu a childish man and not a team leader. Sidhu is a loner and not a team leader, How will he handle the Punjab Congress as its chief? For that you need to be a team player, which Sidhu is not. He is the crowd puller, people gathered to hear his speech, but they will not vote for the party", Captain said.
"The Congress is going downhill. In the current scenario, we see in a recent survey done by the Congress between July and September that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is going up and the Congress is going down. The people clearly don't have any trust in Sidhu. Congress has seen a 20% decline according to that survey,", Amarinder said in the interview.
Mr. Amarinder Singh has met the Union Home Minister Amit Shah and National Security Advisor, Ajit Doval, during a meeting with Doval, Mr. Amarinder reportedly discussed the Punjab border security issue and infiltration of Pakistan terrorists to the state.
