Congress leaders Kirti Azad, Ashok Tanwar join TMC

On a day of gains to Trinamool Congress (TMC), two Congress leaders  Kirti Azad and Ashok Tanwar joined the West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee-led party on Tuesday.

Congress leaders Kirti Azad, Ashok Tanwar join TMC

New Delhi: On a day of gains to Trinamool Congress (TMC), two Congress leaders Kirti Azad and Ashok Tanwar joined the West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee-led party on Tuesday. The same day, TMC made foray into Bihar after JDU leader Pawan Varma joined the party. 

Kirti Azad, son of former Bihar chief minister  Bhagwat Jha Azad, was elected to Parliament on a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ticket from Darbhanga, Bihar. He was previously an MLA from Delhi's Gole Market constituency.  On 23 December 2015 he was suspended from BJP for openly targeting Union finance minister Arun Jaitley over alleged irregularities and corruption in Delhi's cricket body Delhi and District Cricket Association. Later he joined Congress in 2019. However, he lost the 2019 general election from the Dhanbad Lok Sabha constituency against BJP candidate Pashupati Nath Singh.

Ashok Tanwar, who is married to former President Shankar Dayal Sharma's granddaughter, quit Congress to join TMC. Tanwar is former President of the Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee, He was MP from Sirsa and Secretary, All India Congress Committee.  He was the youngest person to become the president of the Indian Youth Congress.

After joining TMC, Tanwar said, "Glad to be part of  TMC, Indian politics is at a rare crossroads today - on one hand, we're witnessing the triumph of optics, on other hand tragedies of the marginalized and poor continue. The real issues are getting buried - we need a new politics to turn the tide".
