Former Himachal Pradesh CM Virbhadra Singh passes away

Shimla: Former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister and Congress leader Virbhadra Singh passed away at 87 after battling with prolonged illness in early hours of Thursday.

Medical Superintendent Dr Janak Raj, Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital, Shimla, issued a statement on the passing of Virbhadra Singh.

As a mark of respect to veteran leader Virbhadra Singh, the Government of Himachal Pradesh has decided to observe three days of state mourning, from 8th July to 10th July.

The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, has expressed deep grief over the demise of the former Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, Virbhadra Singh.

In a tweet, the Prime Minister said, "Shri Virbhadra Singh Ji had a long political career, with rich administrative and legislative experience. He played a pivotal role in Himachal Pradesh and served the people of the state. Saddened by his demise. Condolences to his family and supporters. Om Shanti."

Five-time Chief Minister:

Virbhadra Singh became the Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh for the first time in April 1983 and held the post until March 1990. He was again appointed to the role between December 1993 and March 1998; and assumed office from March 2003. With reappointments within those years, this record amounted to him holding the office on five occasions.

He also served as Himachal Pradesh Congress president in 1977, 1979, 1980 and from 26th August, 2012 to December 2012.
