Gehlot to take oath as Karnataka Governor on July 11

Bengaluru: Former Union minister Thawarchand Gehlot will be sworn in as the Governor of Karnataka on July 11 at the Glass House of Raj Bhavan.

Gehlot (73), who was Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment, will succeed Vajubhai Vala.

Vala was the longest-serving Governor for Karnataka after Khurshed Alam Khan. Vala had taken over from K Rosaiah, the then Governor of Tamil Nadu, who was given additional charge of Karnataka after H.R. Bhardwaj’s five-year tenure came to an end in June 2014.

Gehlot was one of 12 union minister resigned ahead of the massive Cabinet reshuffle. The appointment of Gehlot came along with change of heads of other states across the country as approved by President Ramnath Kovind on July 6th

He will be the 19th Governor of Karnataka. He was also the opposition leader in the Rajya Sabha (Upper House). He was a member of the Parliamentary Board and the Central Election Committee of the BJP

He is also the first person, serving as the Governor of Karnataka from Madhya Pradesh. Gehlot formerly represented Sahajapur in the lower house of Indian Parliament, Lok Sabha, from 1996 to 2009.
