Imran Khan govt fails to prove a majority in the National Assembly.
Pakistan PM Imran Khan loses no-confidence motion, joins the list of PMs who failed to run the government for five years.
Imran Khan, Pakistan's prime minister, was the country's first to be ousted by a no-confidence vote. Khan, who remained stubborn "till the last ball," was removed well after midnight, following a day of high drama in the Pakistan assembly.
The unified opposition, which included a spectrum of socialist, liberal, and profoundly religious groups, received 174 votes in the 342-member house, surpassing the required 172 votes to dismiss the Prime Minister.
PML-N leader Shehbaz Sharif, the younger brother of three-time Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, is expected to become the next Prime Minister of Pakistan.
During the vote on the no confidence motion, outgoing PM Imran Khan was not present. He was mocked by PPP leader Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari. He said, "Imran is the first captain, who is racing from the pitch with wickets because he is afraid of losing the match."
Imran Khan has joined a long list of prime ministers who have failed to complete their full five-year terms. No Pakistani prime minister has served a full five-year tenure.
Only the opposition voted in the no-confidence motion when members of Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Party stormed out of the assembly moments before the vote began. Imran Khan left the Prime Minister's official house minutes before the result was announced.
On Friday, members of the ruling party stated that they would try to postpone the vote for as long as possible. At a meeting with a group of his favourite journalists late Saturday evening, Imran reiterated his commitment to play "till the last ball".
Earlier, Khan had alleged a foreign plot, claiming that foreign powers are attempting to destabilise Pakistan's government and that Pakistan's parliamentarians are being traded like sheep to achieve this. "We learned that US diplomats were visiting our country." Then we learned about the whole idea of "'I'm not at liberty to publicly divulge all the information because of national security issues,'" he stated. The US has categorically denied these allegations, stating that they contain "absolutely no veracity."
Khan also called upon the public to hit the streets and protest against this "imported government" in a peaceful manner.
