PSI arrested for forcing youth to drink urine

Chikmagalur: Police Sub-Inspector, who forced a Dalit youth to drink urine and allegedly harassed in the lock-up at Gonibeedu police station, has been arrested by CID police.

Accused, PSI Arjun Honakere has been arrested by CID police; police have given enough time for the accused to get bail in the High Court; however, his bail application has been rejected by the High Court, with no option left, Arjun was surrendered before the police, the CID has taken him to custody.

PSI was booked under IPC and SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Amendment Act. Then Chikmagalur SP has ordered to file FIR against the accused following public outcry. Social activists and NGOs had urged the arrest of the accused, but police have given ample time to the accused to approach the court for bail.

Arjun is facing charges under the SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Amendment Act; PSI has picked Dalit youth Punith from Kiragund village on May 10, allegedly forced him to drink urine and was beaten in the police station.

In the complaint, Punith has stated that he was suspended from the ceiling with his hands and legs tied with a rope and thrashed badly. When he pleaded for water, Arjun was forced him to drink urine. After various SC/ST organizations taken up the matter, police have suspended SI and ordered for investigation.

Session Court and High Court have rejected the bail application of the SI. Progressive organizations have threatened the SP that if police fail to arrest the accused, they will intensify the agitation across the state.
