Punjab Assembly polls: Congress election committee to finalize first list of candidates

Chandigarh: Central Election Committee (CEC) will hold a meeting today to finalize the first list of candidates for the Punjab elections.

Nearly 40 sitting MLAs have received a green signal from the party high command. The meeting will be held through virtually. Punjab Congress Committee President Navjot Singh Sidhu and Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi will attend the meeting at 6 pm.

Party President Sonia Gandhi, senior leader Rahul Gandhi, other leaders of the election committee will attend the meeting. Punjab will go for elections on February 14 for 117 Assembly seats. Results will be announced on March 10.

Electoral politics in Punjab witnessed many sea changes since 2017. Party veteran and former Chief Minister Amarinder Singh left the party and started his own political outfit Punjab Lok Congress and had an alliance with BJP.

BJP was in alliance with Shiromani Akali Dal won 18 seats and AAP had won 20 seats. In 2017 Congress has won 77 seats, Captain Amarinder Singh was elected as CM.

Congress has appointed Navjot Singh Sidhu as party chief. His outspokenness has brought embracement to the party many times. Captain Amarinder Singh has called Mr. Sidhu is an anti-national and threat to national security.
