Punjab has data on deaths of farmers, but Centre doesn't have, says Rahul Gandhi
Rahul Gandhi said Punjab, a Congress-ruled state, has provided compensation and job for farmers.
New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, speaking in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, demanded compensation and jobs for farmers who died protesting against three controversial farms laws for over a year in the national capital.
Rahul Gandhi called out the Centre's dereliction on the data of farmers who died during the protest. The government has "no record" of the deaths of farmers who were protesting the three contentious laws - that have now been repealed- over the last one year, Agriculture Minister Narendra Tomar had told parliament in a written reply.
He said, "Around 700 farmers died in farmers' agitation. PM apologised to the nation and farmers of the nation. He accepted that he made a mistake. On 30th Agriculture Minister was asked a question- How many farmers died in the agitation? He said he doesn't have any data".
Rahul Gandhi said Punjab, a Congress-ruled state, has provided compensation and job for farmers.
"We found out that Punjab Government has given Rs 5 Lakh compensation for around 400 farmers; also provided jobs for 152 of them. I have the list. We have made another list of 70 farmers from Haryana. Your Government says that you don't have their names".
He further demanded that the farmers are given their rights and they should be given compensation as well as jobs.
