R Priya, first-ever Dalit woman Mayor of Greater Chennai Corporation
The DMK won a majority in all the 21 municipal corporations, including the Greater Chennai Corporation, and came out victorious in most of the 138 municipalities and 490 town panchayats.
Chennai: Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) gets its youngest and first-ever Dalit woman mayor, as DMK's R Priya took the oath of office in Chennai on Friday.
R Priya, from Thiru Vi Ka Nagar in North Chennai, won the Tamil Nadu urban local body elections from ward number 74.
The 29-year-old is Chennai’s third woman mayor. The State Government has reserved the office of the mayor of Chennai and Tambaram corporations for scheduled caste women.
The government order was passed on Monday under the Tamil Nadu town panchayats, municipalities and corporations (delimitation of wards and divisions and reservations) rules, 1996.
