Shehbaz Sharif elected Prime Minister of Pakistan

The lower house of parliament voted in favour of removing Imran Khan from office after following a nearly 14-hour standoff between the Opposition and Khan's ruling party that started on Saturday morning.

Islamabad:  Shehbaz Sharif, the sole candidate for PM, was elected Prime Minister of Pakistan after PTI decided to boycott the session on Monday.   

The PTI parliamentarians walked out of the National Assembly after their candidate, Shah Mahmood Qureshi, announced to boycott the polling process.

Qureshi said although he was the PTI's candidate for the prime minister, he announced to boycott of the election. 

The lower house of parliament voted in favour of removing Imran Khan from office after following a nearly 14-hour standoff between the Opposition and Khan's ruling party that started on Saturday morning.

The Monday session formally started after a brief delay with a recitation of the Holy Quran and naat, with NA Deputy Speaker Qasim Suri in the chair.


Shehbaz Sharif is the current President of the Pakistan Muslim League-N. Previously, he has served as the Chief Minister of Punjab three times in his political career, making him the longest-serving Chief Minister of Punjab.

Shehbaz was elected to the Punjab Provincial Assembly in 1988 and the National Assembly in 1990. He was again elected to the Punjab Assembly in 1993 and named Leader of the Opposition. 

He was elected as chief minister for first time in 1997, Shehbaz was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Punjab on 20 February 1997.
