Lucknow: The sixth phase of polling for 57 seats spread across 10 districts of eastern Uttar Pradesh has begun including polling to Chief Minister’s Yogi Adiyanath's Gorakhpur constituency.  In the 6th phase of polling 21.79 per cent, voter turnout was recorded till 11 am.

Among the 676 candidates, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Congress' Ajay Kumar Lallu and Samajwadi Party's Swami Prasad Maurya are in the fray.

The sixth phase of polling is progress in Ambedkarnagar, Balrampur, Siddharthnagar, Basti, Sant Kabir Nagar, Maharajganj, Gorakhpur, Kushinagar, Deoria and Ballia districts.

In the 2017 Assembly elections the ruling BJP had won 46 of the 57 seats. These 57 assembly segments, of which 11 are reserved, are crucial for the BJP. There are a total of over 2.14 crore voters in this phase.

Speaking to reporters after casting his vote in Gorakhpur this morning Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said that ‘Under PM Modi leadership BJP will make a record and will win the large number of seats in 6th phase of Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. And will move towards our target to win 300 seats in the Assembly election”

Continuing his 80:20 percent remarks, the Chief Minister said that “We will win over 80% seats. Vote for development and security”. His reference is perceived as 80 percent Hindu votes and 20 percent Muslim votes in Uttar Pradesh.

Voting for  292 out of the state's 403 assembly seats already over, the focus has shifted to the crucial Purvanchal region of the state, which has 111 seats - more than a quarter of the total.

The Samajwadi Party has fielded the wife of late Upendra Dutt Shukla, a former BJP leader, against the Chief Minister. Azad Samaj Party founder Chandrashekhar Azad is also contesting in the elections.

The results of six phase of polling will largely depend on the Other Backward Castes (OBCs) and Most Backward Castes (MBCs) who have majority in numbers in 10 districts of eastern UP and have influence over nearly 30 seats.

The 54 remaining seats will go to polls in the last phase of the election on March 7. The votes will be counted on March 10.
