Stalin to convene all-party meet on Mekedatu dam
Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin to chair an all-party meeting on Mekedatu dam construction by Karnataka on July 12.
MK Stalin has called for an all-party meeting after Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa asserted that the state would implement the Mekedatu project across river Cauvery.
According to reports, The chief minister’s meeting is scheduled to take place at the Secretariat at 10.30 am on Monday.
Stalin has written to his BS Yediyurappa asking him not to pursue the Mekedatu project across river Cauvery as it would jeopardize the availability of water to Tamil Nadu.
Early this week, Tamil Nadu, Water Resource Minister Durai Murugan, met Union Minister for Jal Shakti Gajendra Singh Shekhawat in Delhi and handed over a representation of the Karnataka government’s government decision to build a reservoir across the Cauvery river in Mekadatu as well as other inter-state water disputes.
It may be recalled that a committee has been set up by National Green Tribunal (NGT) to submit report on alleged violation of norms in construction of a reservoir across Cauvery river at Mekedatu.
The Karnataka approved the project in 2017. The reservoir, worth Rs 9,000 crore, aims store and supply drinking water for Bengaluru city. It will also generate 400 megawatts of power.
