Shivamogga: Hijab controversy further escalated in Karnataka, Muslim girl students have refused to write their annual exams in Udupi, Shivamogga, Kalaburgi and Madikeri without hijabs. 

Teachers have persuaded them to write exams, but students have firmly stated that they will choose hijabs rather than exams, students have went home without writing exams. 

Students have also protested the decision of schools in Shivamogga, Madikeri and Kalaburgi for not giving permission to wear hijabs. Muslim students have returned to home following schools management has refused them write exams. 

Students have stated that they will not remove the hijabs and also stated that their parents have not insisted to wear hijabs. One Muslim girl bravely questioned the teachers' decision not to allow them to wear hijab. 

Few students have asked to sit in a separate room though they did not wear hijabs. District officials 

However, education officials have denied such education. They said that this incident did not happen. Another parent alleged their child was threatened with the police if she didn't remove the hijab. 

"I will not remove the hijab. I used to attend school earlier with the hijab. The school asked us to either remove the hijab or leave. They did not allow us to appear for exams," one student told reporters. 

The parent of a student stated that they would not send their children to school only after the Karnataka High Court, which is hearing six students' petitions against the ban, rules on the issue.

Some students of a school in Kodagu district staged a protest against the hijab ban.

Speaking to the media persons, Haseena, parent of a student said, “I’m not sending her to school after a ban on hijab in school. I have sent them to school for the past two days as they had preparatory exams for class 10. But some students were asked to sit in a separate room yesterday because they denied removing hijab.”

“Nothing like this happened earlier. Till now, many from our family have studied in this school wearing hijab. Why is there a sudden change in rules?,” she said.

Meanwhile, the government will reopen colleges tomorrow, state government has asked the district authorities to take the necessary precaution in this regard. 

Schools have shut for three days over the hijab row and re-opened on Monday to disturbing scenes of young girls being forced to "remove that (hijabs)" before attending classes.

Visuals also showed teachers being forced to remove burqas in full view of busy public roads.

Students barred from wearing the hijab have argued there is no law prohibiting them from doing so, and the right to do so is protected under religious freedoms granted by the Constitution.

“I will not remove the hijab. I used to attend school earlier with the hijab only. The School administration asked us to either remove the hijab or leave the place. They did not allow us to appear for exams wearing hijab,” Hina, a student said.
