Disco king of Bollywood, singer Bappi Lahiri dies at 69
Bappi Lahiri, one of the most influential figures in Indian film music, was a pioneer of disco in the Bollywood of the 80s and 90s, composing superhit soundtracks for films such as Disco Dancer, Dance Dance and Namak Halaal.
Mumbai: Legendary music composer and singer Bappi Lahiri died at a Mumbai hospital on Tuesday night, he was 69. Bappi Lahiri known for his synthesized disco beats.
Singer was admitted to Criticare hospital in Mumbai, passed away before midnight. When the family take him to the hospital his blood pressure was low, says doctor.
Bappi Lahiri had been admitted to the hospital for a month and was discharged on Monday, but health deteriorated on Tuesday.
“He had multiple health issues. He died due to OSA (obstructive sleep apnea) shortly before midnight, we tried to revive him but it was too late " Dr Deepak Namjoshi, director of CritiCare hospital, PTI reports.

He also had extensive music credits in the world of Bengali cinema, NDTV reported.
Bappi Lahiri was known for delivering popular songs in several films of the late 1970s-80s like Chalte Chalte and Sharaabi. His last Bollywood song titled Bhankas was for the 2020 film Baaghi 3.
Bappi Lahiri ruled the music industry for several years and had given hits such as I am a Disco Dancer, Raat Baaki, Pag Ghoongroo, Bambai Se Aaya Mera Dost, Naino Main Sapna, TaakiTaaki, Humko Aaj Kal Hain Intezaar, Tamma Tamma, Yaad Aa Raha Hai, Yaar Bina Chain Kahan Re, among many others.
He sang several of his own compositions, among them Koi Yaha Naache Naache from Disco Dancer and PyarBina Chain Kaha from Saheb. Bappi da, as he was known fondly, cut a dashing figure with his trademark gold chains and sunglasses.
Bappi Lahiri, real name Alokesh, had a brief stint in politics, joined BJP in 2014. He lost the Lok Sabha election that year to a Trinamool candidate.
Bappi Lahiri's last Bollywood song was Bhankas for the 2020 film Baaghi 3. He is survived by his son Bappa and daughter Rema
He snags 180 songs in one single year. He has entered Guinness book of record. He also appeared as judge in Indian Idol and Sa Re Ga Ma Pa in Zee channel. He is very generous to all friends, family and contestants of Indian Idol. He is singing lot of songs, he composed music for 12 super hits movies. He was only Indian music director by BBC London and he was also honored by House of Lords. He had huge inflenunce in both East and West by his songs.
Bappi Lahiri was last seen on Bigg Boss 15, where he had come to promote the launch of his grandson Swastik’s new song, Baccha Party. It was his first and last appearance on Bigg Boss.
Last year, Lahiri was admitted to a hospital in Mumbai after the veteran was detected with “mild COVID symptoms.” The singer was admitted to the Breach Candy Hospital as a “precautionary measure”.
In his last Instagram post, Bappi Lahiri had shared a throwback monochrome picture of himself wearing shades. He captioned the picture: “Old is always gold.”
As soon as the news of Bappi Lahiri’s death broke, fans began flooding social media with condolence messages. One user wrote, “We lost another musician RIP Bappi Lahiri sir the legend Om shanti.” Another one said, “First Lata Mangeshkar ji and now Bappi da. It’s so sad!”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute legendary musician, he tweeted that “Shri Bappi Lahiri Ji’s music was all encompassing, beautifully expressing diverse emotions. People across generations could relate to his works. His lively nature will be missed by everyone. Saddened by his demise. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti”
Bollywood actor Ajay Devgn and filmmakers Hansal Mehta and Ashoke Pandit were among the first celebrities to express their grief over the demise of the veteran composer on social media. Pandit said that he was “shocked” to hear about the death of “rockstar” Lahiri. He added, “I can’t believe my next-door neighbour is no more. Your music will always remain in our hearts.” While Mehta, who got an opportunity to work with Lahiri in an ad, wrote, “Another legend gone.” Devgn tweeted, “Bappi Da was so endearing in person. But, his music had an edge.”
Cricketer Yuvraj Singh condoles the demise of Bappi Lahiri: “Sad news of the passing away of the legendary musician. He will be fondly remembered for mesmerising compositions loved by people of all ages. RIP #BappiDa”
Filmmaker Hansal paid a moving tribute to Bappi Lahiri. He tweeted, “Another legend gone. #BappiLahiri. Had the good fortune of working closely with him when I shot an ad for p&g and then when I worked with White Feather Films for @_SanjayGupta. Man of incredible melody and talent.”
