Tokyo Olympics: Abhinav Bindra applauds gold medallist Neeraj Chopra
New Delhi: The 2008 Beijing Olympics gold medalist Abhinav Bindra in an emotional tribute applauded Neeraj Chopra on winning the much anticipated gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics.
Neeraj Chopra won the first-ever gold medal in the track and field event for India on Saturday.
Abhinva Bindra said in a tweet, "And Gold it is for @Neeraj_chopra1.Take a bow, young man ! You have fulfilled a nation's dream. Thank you! Also, welcome to the club - a much needed addition! Extremely proud. I am so delighted for you".
The 23-year-old star javelin thrower hails from Panipat in Haryana produced a second-round throw of 87.58m in the finals. The throw ended India's 100-year wait for a track and field medal in the Olympics.
Chopra has won medals in World’s Junior Asian Championships, Commonwealth, and Asian Championships games.
Chopra won the country's first gold in the Tokyo Olympics and joined shooter Abhinav Bindra (2008 Beijing Games) as the country's individual gold winner in the Olympics. The country has won seven medals - two silver, four bronze and a gold.
President Ramnath Kovid, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, union ministers, and Haryana Chief Minister Mohanlal Khattar have congratulated Neeraj Chopra.
