US gives shelter to only 500 war refugees of Ukraine

Though America openly claims that it is ready to offer refuge to the Ukrainian citizens who have been fleeing due to war, in reality, America has allowed a very limited number of people to stay in the US.

According to the data released by the UN, over three million people have already left Ukraine after the war broke out on February 24.

Some reports suggest that instead of giving refuge to Ukrainian in the US, the country wants Europe to first provide refuge to as many people as possible.

Not just President Joe Biden but his deputies including vice president Kamala Harris have reiterated the statements of Biden on letting more people to Ukraine to find shelter in the US.

However, they have also pointed out that since relatives of many Ukrainian live in neighboring countries, they would first prefer to visit those nations.

The US has said that it is ready to provide shelter to refugees if Europe fails to provide adequate protection to the refugees.  The statement comes with a clear underline that "bearing in mind that resettlement to the United States is not a quick process."

Despite the fact that the Biden administration has eased the settlement process of Afghan refugees, the process took years.

While the war continued in Ukraine, over a dozen Democratic lawmakers have already appealed to Biden to provide shelter to more Ukrainian citizens with their families in the US.

Representative Raul Ruiz, who travelled to the Poland-Ukraine border earlier this month as part of a delegation of Democrats and Republicans, said that the United States must lead in the effort to assist these countries in helping the vulnerable escape war.

Even Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy's wife Olena Zelenska has raised the matter and has appealed to American women to support Ukrainian women and children seeking refuge. A coalition of more than two dozen Jewish-American organizations also made similar requests to Biden.

Meanwhile, there are no exact details available, some reports quoting the US that it has allowed over 500 people from Ukraine to find a place in the US.
