WEF called off due to surging COVID-19 variant Omicron cases

Davos: The planned World Economic Forum (WEF) in the Swiss mountain resort of Davos has been called off due to surging cases of the Omicron variant of COVID-19, reported Reuters.
The Annual Meeting was scheduled to take place in Davos-Klosters, Switzerland between 17-21 January, 2022. It is now planned for early summer.
The WEF is mostly known for its annual meeting at the end of January in Davos, a mountain resort in the eastern Alps region of Switzerland.
WEF issued a statement, "Current pandemic conditions make it extremely difficult to deliver a global in-person meeting. Preparations have been guided by expert advice and have benefited from the close collaboration of the Swiss government at all levels. Despite the meeting’s stringent health protocols, the transmissibility of Omicron and its impact on travel and mobility have made deferral necessary."
The Omicron variant has been detected in multiple countries since the discovery, and as of December 17, 2021, 6,228 cases have been detected in Europe with 4,985 of these in the United Kingdom, according to COVID provided by https://www.statista.com.
The Omicron was first identified in South Africa in November. The WHO has classified Omicron as a variant of concern (VoC).
